Best Software for eBooks?

    Adobe?

There is no need for anything fancy. Just something that can be downloaded for free. The only function that would really be of any significance would be the ability to set up a table of contents with hyperlinks for those pages/chapters. All the other features that I would require are most likely standard with this type of software.

    Let me know, thanks.

How about using Microsoft Word and then converting it to PDF (if you have it). This is what I do and recommend as Word has better spell-checking and grammar features.

    Or use Open Office.

I already planned on doing that. All the typing would be done in MS Word. Hopefully I can copy it without losing the format. Open Office has caused a lot of problems for me so that is not an option. Is there not a program that is used for eBooks, besides the basic wordpad softwares? I don't think you can do hyperlinks within the eBook like I mentioned in my original post, or can you?

    Thanks

You can. Although there is a slight tendency that formatting getting a bit disfigured (but I haven’t noticed too much to complain about with text styles), you can preserve all the links if you use a supported converter. I used RoboHelp converter. Try using an online Word to PDF converters which email the PDF to you. The last time I checked, they worked pretty fine.

I am not linking to a website though. It would be like...

Page 1 - Cover page (design)
Page 2 - welcome, contact info, etc
    Page 3 - short intro
Page 4 to 8 - Table of Contents
Page 8 to 300 - Chapters, all the content...

    etc...

The table of contents section will have a list of the chapters, sub-chapters, etc. I want to make those titles hyperlinks. When the reader clicks on the title it will fast-forward them to that specific section of the eBook.

I've used CutePDF Writer before and that seems to work ok you get an option when you go to print it to choose CutePDF and it appears like another printer in your list from there it just converts it to PDF.

OpenOffice is my suggestion. You can type up everything and format it just as you would in Word, and then just convert it in the same software.

Here's a site/PDF that tells you how to format the Table of Contents. The information regarding hyperlinks is located on Page 4 and 5. Best of luck!

I am creating one currently with InkScape. Not too shabby and the price is right. You can get one or two books on it, but it is pretty simple.

Yes, just use a text editor and print it as a PDF. If fancy formatting is important, go for a Open Office or any free word processor.

The goal here is not what you use -- it's what's your preference software that can print a PDF.

And these days that's almost anything.
