The designer who originally designed my site did not create sub folders in order to make it so that sub sub pages don't show up as: index/sub/sub. Rather when you select a link the url is: index/sub Is there any benefit to not having sub pages of sub roots? Or should all related pages be in a folder or sub root? If it doesn't matter then I'll just continue this way because I don't want to lose my inbound links to that page.
People probably have different opinions on this one. Personally, I keep all my pages in the root and those sites preform well.
I usually have all my pages in the root directory too, then just use sub folders for images, "include" files, and other content... but then again, none of my sites have hit pr5 yet, so what do i know...
I've got one site that's a pr 5 that has sub folders. I'm not sure if there is any relation but hoping that someone can clarify the subject.
It's really preference. Generally though, just make the pages indexable. That's pretty much it. Google can index almost anything, which is great. But, to answer your question a little more specifically, people like to put items in folders for a couple reasons. One being that it keeps everything in order, but two, you can add more keywords into the URL string. For instance, site.com/top-level-keyword/secondary-keyword.html So, like I said, its really preference. If you think your site is small enough to not have folders and look neat, then go for it. Personally, I hardly EVER build a site without folders. I just have too much stuff I put in each site to not have them.
