Best sidebar positioning

    Hello

I am wondering what would be the best position for a sidebar (AKA left or right column) in a community site with forums, or more specifically just forums. Do people generally respond better to a site which places the sidebar (which contains navigation, recent topics etc.) on the left of content or on the right of content?

For example I have had my sidebar on the left before now and I have just reversed it and placed it on the right asking the community for feedback on what they'd like better. Here is a page where you can see how it looks: http://www.nuxified.org/experimenting_feedback_welcome

I am asking you guys too just to get a fuller picture of what may ultimately be the best choice.

I have heard that the right top part of the page (where the navigation is usually found) is where the most eyeballs fall, but then again if it is just the navigation I think it isn't that important to have it on the hottest "eyeball zone". :)

Also, since forum posts have a profile area on the left where avatar and users posts count is displayed, placing a sidebar to the right leaves the actual content of the forums that people read be more on the center which may be most comfortable for readers. While if the both sidebar and the profile area of a forum post is on the left, the actual content moves more to the right rather than center.

So, what do you think and what are your general experiences with sidebar placements?

Also, do you think it would be a good idea to try to redesign the site to have no sidebars at all (putting navigation horizontally in the header and recent content blocks below content). One disadvantage of that I can think of is that it may reduce the amount of available advertising space that the sidebar would otherwise have. :)

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.
