Hi, I'm looking into buying a new server for my massively huge website that's receiving about 20-40 requests per second (fun). What kind of processor and how many gigs of RAM do you think I'll need to efficiently deliver content for my website? I was lookin at a Dell PowerEdge 1U and colo'ing to a data center in Florida. Any other thoughts on hardware for my new server? Tipem
Your probably best getting a server with your provider as server hardware deprecates in value fairly fast. It will cost you a bit more per month but if you need to upgrade within 1-2 years it will end up saving you a sizable chunk of change. The best hardware for you depends on the type of site your running. If your hosting static content you won't need as much CPU power as you would if you used a MYSQL database or ran a dynamic site. (PHP/ASP/etc.) "Dell PowerEdge 1U" doesn't really tell us much about the type of hardware you were thinking about. Got a model number?
We have hosted for some sites with 150+ requests/sec, and it's quad-core CPU with 4GB RAM + raid-10 sata disks with Supermicro board. Will it help you any idea?
@xous: sorry about being unclear. check out the dell poweredge here. @gate2vn: thanks for your comments. this is helpful. ----- basically i'm just wondering how much server power i'll need for a website doing about 200gb a month and several million requests per week.
