One of the reasons you start a forum because you want a community of regulars. My approach is to build my forum and let the SEO sort itself out. When the sites are so easily punished because of SEO practices you don't want to engage in any shady link building tactics. Your pages will rank for a few keywords in time. If you get penalized in anyway, your site will not be seen anywhere in main search engine results for any keywords. All the hard work you did building your site will go down the drains. Another important point in SEO is that you spend so much time for nothing as your links keep going down the drain for many reasons. So concentrate on links you are sure will remain in place for a long time. Articles in good article directories, established blogs and established social network sites are some of them. Never ever engage in any link buying because SEO is a long game. You cannot keep up paying them. Go slowly and steadily. Build solid links wherever you can get them. This is very important; Do the work yourself. There are many bold people who are selling cure for boldness out there. Build links you can control and improve like hubpages , wordpress and blogspot. You will probably not need many links to rank these days. Unashamedly ask for links. And most importantly believe that your hard work will pay. I would tell you more but many things in SEO game needs to be retested now with all the penguins and pandas. What worked yesterday don't work today. That is if you were looking for a fast way to the top. That is why I suggest you set up a long term strategy. To succeed, you need to do hundreds of small things right along the way, as well as one or two key ones. I am sorry, there is no "buy this package and rank tomorrow" type of advice here.
