Best SEO use of two related sites

I have two related sites. Site A has been around for 4 years and does great in the engines. I've spent a lot of time submitting to directories, getting backlinks, etc. Site B was created about 3 years ago and I didn't do much in terms of SEO until about 5 months ago. At that time, I started ramping up with content, directory submissions, etc. Both sites have similar content, but are currently hosted at different locations. Site B is starting to get SERP's, but nowhere near Site A.

I would like to use the site A to promote site B. I was curious if there could be any negative affects on either site if I started linking between the two and was assured this wouldn't be an issue.

From a marketing perspective, it makes sense for me to promote Site B from Site A to increase awareness. In terms of SEO, is there a "best" way to link the sites as to get the most impact on Google and the other engines. Site A being a PR 6 linking to Site B which is a PR 4.

For reference, site A and site B.

I would link them together as long as they arent the exact same content. It wont hurt one bit.

So, no harm in linking the sites.

Next question: Is there any benefit (one way or the other) in a minimal amount or specific linking? For instance, one link from my main site to the secondary site on my main site homepage?

Sorry for being so skiddish about this. I've just taken strides to keep them separate (hosting, content, marketing) and just now ready to "join them" by linking. Once I get the SEO implications out of the way, I'll definitely have questions for the Marketing section of this forum. Once I have a clear directive on both Marketing and SEO, I'll start linking.

    Thanks for your responses.

Since it sounds like you are really investing in these sites for the long term, i would encourage you not to overthink the linking strategy between them. I would just let it happen naturally and just link them together when it makes sense.

i have been linkng many sits , i would advise:
    1) build a link map to show you all links between.
    2) always make sure no loops (A>>B>>A) , think of it , if you were a line by line crawler you wold stop on that point.
    3) link from junctions to junctions and from specific page to specific page with related content.
junction (subdomain , index page of directory)
    4) do it slowly and investigate the efect.
    5) use the right anchors but make some "natural" mistakes.

    good luck
