Best search engine for... Searching?

As a writer, I do a LOT of online research. But I am SO sick of Google I can't see straight! All the garbage sites somehow land on the top of the search results to where I can't find anything relevant to what I need.

I've tried Bing and don't like it. Yahoo is no better than Google. And while I LOVE Northern Light, it searches only news stories which doesn't fit my needs.

Can anyone tell me of a GOOD search engine that works for SEARCHING rather than just advertising, building SEO or getting links?

I cant help but think maby the problem lays with you rather than all the search engines on the internet that millions of people use daily without a hitch.

Id suggest you look into your search technique, read up on advance search operators, and dont use long tail keywords.

    EG.

    Dont do:
"how do i do a search on the internet using the google search engine to find what i want?"

    Use:
    "How to use Google"

Failing that, find a list of search engines, and work your way thru them to see which one meets your needs.

Altavista, Lycos, Ask ect are viable alternatives.

Google is by far the best search engine out there, only Bing has any comparison. As the above poster mentioned change your settings around a little this might help reach your desired results.

Well, not knowing me, I can see where you might think this, but I've been online since 1994 and I use advanced search techniques. My problem is mainly that Google doesn't return what I search for.

For instance, today I searched for direct sales booking tips (without quotes) for an article I was researching. Google's results came up with mainly articles about direct sales tips and then some direct sales booking tips at the bottom of the page, but I had to weed through the ones I didn't want first. The same is true if I use quotes around the phrase, though then the results are often too narrow.

It's as if Google pulls part of my search terms but doesn't use them all, if that makes sense. The search throws the more valid results at the bottom of the page (and I use 50 results per page) and gives me results that only partially relate to what I asked for at the top.

In addition, I've been getting a LOT of garbage sites lately where there is no correlation to what I searched for at all. Though that's not Google's fault, it slows down my search process a lot.

Before the Internet was so flooded with information, I never had these problems finding what I needed. I know everyone raves about Google, but it just seems that there has to be a better option. Maybe not.

Have you tried eZdia (www.ezdia.com) , a new search engine which gives better results result and an additional feature of bringing Experts and Explorers at one place while search, and thus leads to accurate and useful knowledge being shared.

Try cuil.com, it certainly caused a lot of hype when it launched.

Cuil was developed by some ex-Google employees, it was supposed to be a potential Google killer, however it never took off and functionality/usability was a bit.. naff really.. Give it a go tho.

Well if you ask me the best search engine for searching is not just one but all the top search engines. You can search google for results but you might also want to try bing or yahoo search if you find garbage sites in google.

Only those are the best available search engines. May be your keywords are not good enough to bring you the results you expected. Try searching with different keywords.

I seem to get more relevant results from Bing these days. They have really raised their game in the last few months whereas Google is plodding along without much visible improvement,

I have expiramented with alot of search engines to use rather than Google but always come to the conclusion tha Google is the best. You do get some garbage sites some times but it is easier to use and gives more relevant results than any other search engine.

You could always try like dogpile or webcrawler although I dont know if they would turn out any better results for you.

I dont think ezdia gives better search result. However, ezdia allows you to connect to experts and you may be able to get answers from experts. This is more of a "networking through search engine" and getting your answers answered from experts.

It seems as though you have to sign up for an account just to get search results? Not sure that will catch on.
