Final Fantasy III (FF3 in the States) for the Super Nintendo. Fantastic. I feel that the 16-bit RPGs were some of the best ever.
Final Fantasy Online XI is my favourite, spent hours happily fishing on there to try and earn more gil!!!!!! Can't wait for the new Final Fantasy Online to come out later this year, trailer already looks awesome!
Depends on what you mean by RPG. I feel that there is a definitive difference between a Japanese made RPG and a western RPG. Most western RPGs (these days) allow you fashion a character completely out of scratch (though you might not have a control on your character's history either way). Which means that you get to choose the gender, look, age and more. With most J-RPGs, the play is thrust into a set role of some hero-type character who suffers from one convenient problem that gives a blank personality. The stories and gameplay for both genres are also quite difference and as such, it feels odd having to compare the two. Personal Favorite J-RPG: Xenogears & Wild Arms 2nd Ignition Personal Favorite W-RPG: Knights of the Old Republic & Fallout 3
