Just wanted your opinions. What is the best resource to learn HTML and CSS? I tend to like to learn by example by decompiling sites with Firebug and meddling with the code, then using a resource like w3schools..but how have you all learnt? what resources did you use? just interested.

I've learned HTML and CSS by using Macromedia Dreamweaver. You can do something using visual mode (looks like doing something in Word etc.) and check out the source code your action has generated.
Well, as a beginner, I followed the Lynda tutorials for Adobe DreamWeaver. Although most of the instructions are for the design view, I find it very helpful to also look at the code view at each step, it's a much faster way to really learn html.
The best way of learning HTML and CSS is to check out the tutorials on W3 Schools. Keep practicing the stuff on notepad and trust me, eventually it becomes second nature. It'll make you extremely competitive against the people who look up a lot of this stuff on search engines. You have to know the road very well before you can drive fast and smoothly on it!
I mostly learned through Dreamweaver. I used book and online resources, and after some time I began really understanding what was going on.
I learned from w3schools at first, after completing w3schools' tutorials, I learned from Lynda.com. At first, I used normal text-editor for coding, then moved to Dreamweaver.
i learned it with google, and random crap sites that look utterly disgusting lol. back then, there was no w3schools. w3schools is heaven compared to the crapy sites that i started learning from lol.
W3 School is obviously a great website but when it comes to HTML there is no better way than to practice. Practice will allow give you excersise in solving problems, and trust me, html can be a boat load of problems. So read literature while you give tutorials or own projects are go. Attack challenges and ideas that are slightly beyond what you are capable of, that is how I have been able to self educate myself, keep the motivation high and enjoy learning.

I would second the suggestion of Lynda Video Tutorials. Sure you can pick up bits and pieces by using Firebug and learning as you go. But at some point, it's worth getting a comprehensive overview of the subject. Otherwise there will always be gaps in your knowledge.
I learned by myself, reading random stuff, mostly of copy/pasting example codes at the start. Then after some time, W3Schools had helped me get more appropriate with my codes. So in short, it was mostly self-experience that I learned. And also lately I was onto the latest news of CSS3 and HTML5, still have yet to find a nice blog about HTML5 but CSS3.info seems good. Oh and if anyone of you knows of a nice blog about HTML5, please let me know! ^^ Forgot to add, you can check videos in YouTube, there are various tutorials about almost everything.
@ TheDeadLike - check out HTML5Rocks.com and HTML5Code.com. Ajaxian covers a lot of HTML5/ standards based development too, but lately they have been updating less frequently.
I agree. W3 schools have good tutorials. And start from a working to z. Don't pay more attention to something because you think it's more interesting. Learn everything to the fullest, cause every aspects comes in handy for different purposes
