    copyscape is the number one.
However, if you want to check free of charge, Google can offer it to you or plagiarism-detect.com...

How about one more reliable, free checker?
    http://www.dustball.com/cs/plagiarism.checker/?

I have used it extensively and it worked for me very nicely the majority of times. They also have a premium version which you can use if you don't mind paying them every month.

@ OP - If you're trying to avoid having to pay Copyscape for your dupe checking you can always do it for free by uploading your content to a free blog and then paste the blogs URL into Copyscape. It takes a minute or two but it's a free way to utilize the best dupe checker on the Internet.

I agree with others, copyscape is the best available choice, provides effective results on the dupe searches made.

COPYSCAPE PREMIUM is the best tool to make sure that the content one intends to post on the web is absolutely original :)

One thing for certain please do not paste your articles at any random site that claims to check for plagiarism. An editor informed me last week about sites that claim to check for plagiarism for free and actually have it uploaded elsewhere even before you can use it.

Obviously Copyspace is the bread and butter of plagiarism detection, however there are a few free sites that can be used instead of, or in combination with, copy space. I suggest running your writings through one of the afore mentioned free copyright scanners first, if they say its plagiarized then you can modify your content accordingly. If they find no problems with the texts, then you may want to pay the 5 cents on copyspace to be absolutely positive that you wont infringe on any ones material. This method requires a bit more of your time, but in writing multitudes of articles it can save some money.
