    Hello all!

I noticed that a forum needs a lot of resources to get on with.. So im wondering where is the best place to host one? and probably the cheapest.

I decided to go for paid one since I cannot afford this one to get into something hairy, which happens more on free host.

Shared hosting should be ok for now. You can upgrade if you ever need to. Although I've heard many bad things about 1and1.com - I've had them for a year and no problems. They're cheap :) I ran SMF and now I use vbulletin and everything is still quick.

With the 1and1 beginner package, you're allowed 10 mysql databases. Each database is allowed 100MB of storage. My vbulletin forum is using 13.14MB right now with 86.86 MB free space.

If your just starting out, a shared package at hostgator should do just fine.

When I started my forum, I used hostgator for about 6 months. The service and support were pretty good for the price.

You also can jump to VPS.. There is a lot of VPS out there offer a cheap price nowdays (unmanaged). Ofc you wont get a cPanel but hey LxAdmin is good too.. They constantly upgrading thier software which for me much much better than cPanel.

Look for ClanDrive or Santrex VPS.. This will give you a room to expand yet you dont have to worry for using more cpu usage (if you have a lots of members & high traffic).

If you still in testing period I suggest you go with free hoster like www.1sthoster.com I know the owner and he is a nice person well at least when I'm in testing phase he dont even mind I use more than 15% CPU resource (I use like 40% at that time for my video streaming web). Altho you will be given 100mb space for starting if you need more you can request for it as long as you have more than 1k unique visit ^^.

Start out with a shared plan and when your forum is larger and more active move to a VPS.

Most decent shared hosts should be able to host you to start with, once you get more active you can move to more powerful hosting on things such as Virtual Private Servers.

Just make sure you pick a decent host, a shared host should be able to satisfy your needs to start off with, no need to over-pay.

I personally like dreamhost, but its kinda depends on your luck. I got 7 accounts there on different servers, one of them are really awful, two are not as great as I'd like them to be, and the other 4 are just fine. their support team is great and the prices are low. if you get the wrong server you might suffer from slowness/downtime, tho.
