I am using Netbeans too... I think it's the best solution if you do real php programming, not just small scripts. Dreamweaver is nice for smaller projects perhaps, but when you mess with OOP and large projects, some features of netbeans are real lifesavers.

    Hi

i'm using only gedit. To find code snippets the web offers all you need. I think any text editor is good, gedit highlights variables and constants and son on, it makes easier to identify the code.

Dreamweaver is not ideal for the non Unicode pages and does not allow the non BOM UTF-8.

Last time I use the Notepad++ (but with the donation) with the http://www.yiiframework.com/ it is ideal.

I use Notepad++ for smaller scripts.... heck I even use the editor in cPanel :)
But for complex projects, I use Netbeans like the guy above pointed out. The simplicity and portability of Notepad++ can't be beaten though.

If your projects are organized in folders, you have a lot of files to deal with, you need to keep the history of your file edits, you might have to connect to subversion server etc then Netbeans is the way to go.
If you are begginer Dreamweaver might do the job for you.
If you want to edit 1-2 files then go for Notepad++

I feel Komodo Edit is a great tool.

It supports autocompletion, both from standard library and custom code.
It can handle multiple language files (such as HTML with PHP tags and some Javascript), with autocompletion for all of them
Is fully scriptable, in Javascript and Python
    Recognizes a lot of languages
    Is open source
