Hey, I've been recently negotiating to sale one of my bigger websites. So far the potential buyer and I have talked around the mid $X,XXX range and with some luck the deal should be closed this week. I was wondering what was the best way to receive an amount like this. Is paypal suitable? Recently I've seen more and more threads popping up where people now prefer money bookers instead. Any one here have an experience on receiving a similar amount paid at once? What payment system did you use? What sort of delays or problems could occur? Highly appreciate all the feedback Thanks.
Yes, You had better use Escrow..You also can use paypal. As far as I know,he can not open a dispute if he send you the money by masspay
For website sales,i never use paypal. Instead,i use liberty reserve coz the fee is cheaper and it no charge back.
If your buyer is genuine and well known to you then you can go with paypal else go with escrow for safety purpose. DON.
If you know your buyer is legitimate and they trust you, request a direct wire transfer. Otherwise, use an escrow service. It's expensive but it's not worth the risk to lose the money and the website.
Wire transfer will be best i think. If you don't know the potential buyer very well you can go for excrow.
I second everything said above with regards to Escrow, however in case you do choose to use PayPal then here a tip: As soon as you receive the payment, send the buyer a CD that contains the files of the website. Pointless? Yep. Expensive? Sure. Needed? Absolutely! The point of doing this is that in this case the buyer won't be able to win a "non receipt" dispute against you, and since the "not as described" dispute doesn't apply to digital items, their only way of charging back is filing an "unauthorized" dispute (keep reading) or charging back via their bank / credit card company. Obviously there's next to nothing you can do against a credit card chargeback, but in order to have a chance to win an "unauthorized" dispute, there's one more step to do: Right after transferring the domain name, open up the whois details of this domain (showing the recipient's details) and take a screenshot, proving that the domain is on their name. In case you transfer via NameCheap, make sure you DON'T push whoisguard with the domain - as otherwise nothing will be shown on the whois page. I've sold a ton of websites, always used PayPal for transactions below $2,000 (Escrow is simply way too expensive, especially as I'm not in the US), have had several problematic buyers but am yet to lose a dispute (following the tips that I gave you above). Good luck!
I think you should go for Wire Transfer.. Its fast as well as better than others and without any risk. - Mr.President -
Wire Transfer would be the best option however if you do not know the buyer that well they may not be willing to do it as it provides no protection at all for them.
