What would the best payment processor be for $1 purchases? I guess I should have every one that doesn't charge a monthly fee right (how many are there like that?)

    What's your volume?
If you stay under $500 a month, you can just have a personal paypal account. You could also look into micropayments if you are going to have US and UK(not sure about this) payments.

I hope to quickly go above $500 per month ^_^ but of course am not sure if I will or not. I will stick with PayPal until that point certainly...

What costs am I looking at with moneybookers or e-gold? What is micropayments? I am from Canada and expect the majority of my customers to be so as well, but I hope to offer full international support as well!

Having the same feeling myself, I would also stand for using a Personal Paypal account. You won't be able to accept a credit card payment but you won't get charged commission for that amount either as long as the payer is using his Paypal balance to send you the money.

I believe that they have something called micropayment rates. You may want to look into that.
