I do not have the option of having a fluid page on a script I am running, I hear that many viewers are not happy with larger page formats, is this true?

What is the prefered page width 800, 900, 980, 1000?

    Thanks!

You should generally stick with 800 to please all viewers since there is a huge % still using 800. But if you decide to go larger... go for 1024 already, no point in using 900 sizes since they arent that popular

800 for sure, it drives me nuts when I have to scroll right, I run at 800x600. Actually I set my web pages at 750 to give a little breathing room for monitors that aren't aligned properly, not sure if that's necessary, but it's just me.

Every site I have made has been fluid. This way I never have to worry about users viewing problems.

800 is the suggested. I usually make my site 750 centered. It gives a nice effect, but can be constraining. Thats where a fluid design comes in.

You said you cant go fluid with the scrpit you've got so 800 would be just fine. I read somewhere recently that up to %35 of people have 800 resolutions. Also, even though I have a high res screen that doesnt mean I always surf in a full window. I often go somewhat smaller and 800 size sites fit nicely.

You should always try to use fluid whenever possible. If you cannot use fluid I would recommend using 780. This gives a a nice size and appearance even on a 800 screen.

As for 900 and 980, those are rather akward amounts, what made you choose those? I always try to make my sites 97% of the screen width. You always want to have a little margin in there. Also try to keep in mind your target audience. Who is reading your site? Is it mostly younger people who are into technology, then you can assume they have good vision and have up-to-date computers with large screen resolutions. Look at Download.com, they have a large fixed-width layout (around 955), and use tiny fonts. That says something about who they expect to be visting the site. People who keep up-to-date with the latest software also generally have up-to-date computers. On the other hand, you have sites like RobsHelp.com, which is obviously targeted towards an older audience. He uses a very large font size, and uses a fixed-width of about 660. Why? Because his sight is mostly viewed by older people with bad eyesight. You have to determine who is viewing your site and construct your layout accordingly. If you think your site is going to viewed by everybody, be on the safe side and use a fixed-width layout of 750 - 780. That is what most credit card and even bank sites use. Even the White House uses a fixed width layout of around 750.

IMO the optimum size used to be 800 just like how it used to be 640 before that. its now at 1024 and i think if you mention on your website that this site is best viewed at 1024 then you are good. I dont think there are many ppl left who use 800x600 anymore.

780 fills up a full screen in 800 by 600 and many people do still use it so that would be most suitable.

While screen sizes have increased, people do not necessarily run their apps maximized. Larger screens tend to be too wide for comfortable reading (columns of about 60–65 characters are proven best). Further, larger monitors allow for multiple smaller windows to be visible at the same time, a definite plus.

I, for one, run my browsers at 800×600px, my text editor at about 600px wide and other apps no wider or taller than they have to be—which is very, very rarely maximized at 1280×960.

The 800px, 760px net, wide window seems to be the optimum design width.

    cheers,

    gary

780 fixed width on almost all of my sites.

sometimes if I go larger everything "past" the 780 will just be things I don't care about... cpm ads, etc. ;-)

I would do 800 that way it works for everyone. 1000 may not work for all but 800 will even if it looks a little small.

They used to seem small to me, but after a couple of years, I prefer the look. Even on my 21" monitor, there is something tidy and professional looking about the 800 width.

    Centered.

I despise the ones aligned to the left so that I have to look to the left.

I use 800x600 as most dont have 1000 and those who do are developers or designers like myself. I never can satisfy the entire public. I just want to satisfy my customer.

I try to do that where images will stretch and not look distorted but It just ruins the feel.

Roll your mouse wheel or use the browser window to change your text size.

Did you notice that your top links vanish behind the image?

If a speck shows, it will still work to click. But I noticed that if they vanish totally out of sight, Firefox won't let me click through the top image or field of color.

    Nice looking palatte.

yeah they go behind the background images for some reason.....the navbar isn't well designed, it's kind of hacked together, but i didn't want to use images to do it because i will have to change it in the future most likely.

but my point is stretchable to a limit is the way to go...only about 10% of the people on my site are at 800x600 and that's only at work, if it's 780px wide that's too much wasted space and harsh white space for people at higher resolutions
