I wondered if anyone had suggestions on what open source solution to go with for my online fashion store. My plan is to get a web designer/developer to create the initial templates and build the basic website, but after that I’ll be updating the copy and images myself (I have very basic CMS skills but happy to learn more). Ideally it should be able to offer the following (some are desirable rather than essential): Be sufficient for a store selling 50-100 products to start (growing over time to up to 250 ideally) Easily updatable (copy and images) Feature a good range of product features e.g zoom, multiple images Easy to use shopping cart and compatible with a range of payment products Customer account area SEO-able Blog area Send to a friend function (Desirable) Wishlist (Desirable) Send a virtual or physical gift voucher (Desirable) At the moment I’m leaning towards Magento but I know there are a few downsides (e.g. slow to run) but your opinions are welcome! Also, if you have a rough idea of how many working hours a site like this would take to put together using one of the main open source systems that would be really useful. Thanks
OsCommerce and Magento are very good solutions, but they both have drawbacks that you need to be aware of. OsCommerce can be very difficult to customise if you are new to the system. The base code is updated infrequently, with security patches and updates pretty much only coming through the community at large. However the number of add-ons is amazing. There is almost a payment module for every gateway you can think of. Magento is easier, slicker and better to maintain, but it is a little bit larger and unwieldy. It is getting a lot better, and most of the issues with URLs can be fixed. Not all payment gateways are covered out of the box, and if you want to make any majoy changes to the system, you need to know your code. There are other options out there, like zencart, virtuemart and cubecart, but I think the above two are by far the best.
Why are you making it so difficult. Create your own online stores in two steps. Visit http://www.zscart.com/. It has a 30 days free trial too.
according to your requirements joomla is the best solution that go with your site. you can customize your website very well and integrate whatever payment modules you want. I have developed many website using joomla and i am very satisfied with this. one of the best thing about joomla is you can find each and every modules of joomla very easily on internet and very easy to integrate with website.
I found OSCommerce the easiest to use. Even though I had only been using it at a basic level for 3-4 months I was able to create my own plugins, and modify other people's plugins - completly customizing everything. For bits which are beyond my knowledge I outsource at sites like vworker and odesk, normally paying between 5-20 USD for a couple of days work. Also lots of documentation available, and support in forums etc.
Prestashop will be your best bet. As much as I hate emphasizing this, but Prestashop tops over every feature other shopping carts can provide. You can check out their demo at prestashop.com - see the quality for your self Also, some shopping carts (like OSCommerce), if you want to add features to your shopping cart, it costs at least $50 USD to get a programmer to install it. While for prestashop, you can add features yourself literally in 10 secs, and most of the are free! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Need Advice on Starting Your E-Commerce Website? Joomla or Drupal or Magneto is good. Magento provides excellent admin section with lots of functionality...but if you want to provide some extra functionality, it might increase the development cost.

MAjento sound goods - Joomla with a special module will do the job but i prefer to use Prestashop...or crea
I would use magento as it's involving faster than most open source CMS tools in the market and the support & resources are very good. shivun
