Best (open source) gallery system?

What is the best open source gallery system? I am looking for a good system that allows a high level of customization when it comes to layout and page design. It should also be able to handle categories and sub categories well. Any suggestion on what to use?

Wow, that's exactly what I was looking for (as dumb as that sounds). Seriously, I had started to write my own in PHP & MySQL Thanks again!

either it's AJAX or it's not, it can't be 'like'

 

Well bells and whistles are nice but in the end you want a site that looks like your own. Just look at the many php nuke website that all look the same...

Well, it IS AJAX, i just used the "-like" since AJAX can't be used to describe a word.

So let me rephrase: It is made with AJAX

i did some quick own research and i decided to go with coppermine..

 

Vote for CPG. it would be awesome intergated with lightbox though
