Today, I saw a few threads from "Solicitations & Announcements": all the last directories based on the same script. More that: some webmasters make the directories every day (one per day as minimum). It's for money only? I think, what AdSense (and same other PPC systems) help to litter up the Internet. Usually, site for money isn't the site for people...
I really hate these directorires which use that same bloody script and make no effort to create a new design or even pay the money to remove the copyright link. Shows how seriously they are taking their directory....not.
It doesn't matter if all the directories are looking alike but the content should be diffrent and tat should be specific for a diffrent category. If that direcories are not helping the ppl on net that should banned.
Hi, I agree, and so do Google I'm sure. But when thinking about the quality of a directory (for humans as well as for SE's), surely it doesn't matter which script people are using. What's more important is how well it grows - ideally having enough appropriate categories, with relevant sites in them. And as you well know; that depends on the Editor, not the script.... Cheers, Paz.
Some say flattery is being copied, but it does get old. Two that I've seen and like: Site-Sift - this is one you'll see copied a lot, but his is the original and deserves credit IMO. MassiveLinks - an original that had good layout and clean results.
It's a good directories. But most of new directories, having a little content have a many blocks of Adsense (literally around of all content). I hate the sites made specially for AdSense. It's my point of view.
And once they notice the adsense profit is low they stop maintaining the directory and it's off to a slow dead.. If you want to stand out in the directory crowd there should be a unique design, categories in depth, clean listings and not to many listings on one page. Take a look at the top web directories they all contain these things, like abilogic, botw, site-sift and others mentioned in this thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=42088 I believe it takes a lot of time and effort to make a directory worth submitting to and that will grow in traffic. I'm running my directory for about 8 months now and I'm still having fun with it, creating categories, promoting and fine tuning the directory. I'm implementing some new features pretty soon.. Anyway good luck to everybody who's creating a new webdirectory. Let us be amazed!
It's true that many new diectories based on the same scripts look similar. These scripts are not very easily customizable or perhaps the owners want to start accepting submissions as soon as possible and don't spend a lot of time on the design. I tend to submit to any new directory that is well structured with enough categories and sufficiently selective (not too many 100% made for Adsense or spammy sites in the listings) even if it doesn't look very nice. I'm not saying the design is not important, but it can be improved over time.
If you think that having adsense on a directory is not appropriate, you can also look for directories which do not have adsense on them. There are several of them. But you should always be on the look for good directories. There are several which have adsense on them but still are worth submitting to.
i wrestled with the notion of whether or not to put Adsense on my directory - i hate where they throw adsense in your face, and the listings are not taken care of. But in the end i decided to put adsense on it and i disguised it in such a way that i think it doesnt look tacky. So far, im happy with the results. http://pghsource.cagintranet.com/directory/
