Best link building strategy for long tail website

Most of the website owner try to get top SERP for very specific keywords around the topic of their website. But would be a good backlink strategy for a website having many topics (like a directory) and for each topic many pages targeted for long tail keywords?

    Thx

I focus on lots of long-tail rather than one keyword myself.

My blog has a pagerank 5 and I receive a huge portion of my traffic from longtail keywords. Here are all my techniques:

I focus on some long tail but I think the specific keywords are more important.

I mix it up between both main keywords and long tail. It's worked well for me. I have a site that ranks #1 for it's main keyword. The main keyword brings 1% of the traffic. The top 50 keywords bring 20% of the traffic. The other 80% of the traffic comes from the long tail.

I see that the greater part of the traffic comes from long tail keywords. It is not difficult to have a site optimized for some set of long tail keywords, just creativity will help a lot :)
