laptopsdirect is a good place to look. White sony for 406. Don't know if Fujitsu siemens are still doing the deal but when I bought mine a year ago they offerred 3 years wordwide insurance for a few % extra. Includes theft-travel and (the fate of the previous IBM machine) wine spillage. LOL. Best of all the Fujitsu can run windows 2000 (unsupported but it works). I have an ancient Acer which still works after 6 years so would recommend them and can't blame IBM for my wine accidents so that was good for 2 years too, now fixed anyway. HP-compaq was terrible - barely lasted the year before one problem after another. AVoid.
I got a toshiba... I got a good one worth £700 for £270 by importing it from America while they were suffering from inflation (including postage and packaging to UK and VAT paid). I think that there should still be some bargains to be had if you buy off an american ebay seller and get covered by using paypal, as the dollar is still quite low. It's so good it's almost a year later and I've not had one problem with it albeit when I installed 8 different anti-virus suites which didn't get along together... NB: If you live in America it might not work, but I'm guessing your not by the pound sign you used in the question, lol.
