Best keywords to use for Nonprofits to find me in their searches?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by mikehende, Aug 31, 2023.

Hey guys, since I have a 24 year old Autistic son, I would like to help local Nonprofits with their website needs and have done a lot of keyword research using Semrush and other tools but only keywords I am finding seems to be more suited for Nonprofits themselves to do their own SEO and not for an SEO or Website service trying reach the Nonprofits Organizations.

So which keywords can I use for the Nonprofits to find me in their searches please? Thanks.

Think of it from their perspective. What are they looking for and how will they word it differently from a company looking for the same thing?

I have one non-profit with an in-house membership management system, they've tried replacing it but it's really hard to find a fully featured off-the-shelf system that isn't eye wateringly expensive. We were, primarily searching on "membership management system" but with the research you've done, you can probably work out what the freelance services equivalent is.

You might need to offer an ebook or something similar to attract the smaller non-profits who are trying to DIY and then convince them that it'd be easier to hire you.

Thanks. The first problem for me is how they can find me in their searches. If I am a startup nonprofit seeking website help I would type something like 'web design for nonprofits' or 'seo for nonprofits' e.t.c.

However, from my standpoint, I am not seeing any decent search volume for those keywords which I can try to push on google.

Yeah, I just don't think that's what they'd use as search phrases, but I don't have any helpful suggestions either. My ideas about offering help is about broadening the search phrases that will work, giving people other reasons to come to your site, and building your credibility. By broadening your searchable phrases you'll be able to see which work and which won't and start refining your content based on what you learn.

Great points, thanks. Maybe they would simply look for general web designers and not type anything with with the word nonprofits in it.

Just my own experience, but it might help. I own and write all the copy for my nonprofit Bible-themed website. In my 500+ articles the word "nonprofit" occurs only twice, and nowhere prominently. Yet my nonprofit website (no fees, no ads, no registration) gets about 60,000 unique visitors a month. I just write good copy in my niche on topics of interest to readers, and they find it and come. Just put good content in well-written articles in your area of expertise out onto the internet. They will find you.
