    You choose most relevant keyword from Google add-words keyword tools. Even it will depend on your website that what types of your website is? You should choose high traffic but low competition keyword for your website for better search engine optimization. If your keyword is low competition like personal loans for bad credit then it will rank well on search engine instantly. On other hand your keyword is hard like unsecured loans then it will take enough time to bring on the top of search engine.

    You have to think what keywords are usefull and what keywords will most people use to find a directory.
    Lets say you had a hosting website . Most people search on google the keywords "web hosting"
    Then this is the keywords you want to try to rank.

    I suggest you getting google webmaster tools to check what keywords you have now on your website and try to improve/change or even rank with them

    It's best to do some analysis of a set of relevant keywords in combination with a competition analysis. With the ammount of sites on the web nowadays, you simply can't just create a site and point a relevant keyword at it. You need to also know if that keyword has serious competition or not. Google's keyword tool is, as mkjohn said, great for this, but be aware that you can Do an exact match search and location search, otherwise your results will, as a lot of our competition aren't aware, have completely skewed results with squat all traffic.
