Can anyone tell me what type of Index page Google prefers? Im an amateur web designer and I want to create the page with SEO in mind. Is there a general layout style or page design that does best in the searches? If so can you guys show me an example of what this page should look like. Thanks

This is a very good question that I wish was asked more. Obviously stick to the basics of SEO but as for content I like to make my index pages with 100% unique copy. I set the main word keyword ratio to around 4% without going over 20 words on around a 700 WPP words per page.

Don't go over 50 links on your front page. Put at least 4 images and name them to the subject that you are focusing on. ex: widgets.jpg widgets.gif blue-widgets.jpg.

Try to limit the size of your site template to the raw content. I have built sites with 50/50 where as you only have 50% of unique content with the remainder being consistant throughout.

I have found that going with a 80% unique and 20% template content works. Yahoo does not like template copy as much so that will help with Yahoo also.

Build your site at least 15 pages deep. Always try to tighten up your file extensions. eg: mysite.com/page1.html

Follow all the basics and you will be fine.

Don't use much flash or frames and put only unique content. Include your keywords in the different page urls.
I don't think 50+...even 100+ links are a problem if they are all to your own site or to just 1 other - I have on Austrian site home page 100+/to the destinations there as menus are not suitable/ and also 100+ on the hotels page to my affiliate partners and no problem at all... actually the site has great positions!
That's interesting what Seobiznezz says about the template/content ration, never thought about that, but it seems pretty logic.

Just do some searches and see what pages come up at the top.

The main factor is getting a lot of natural links.
