Best 'how to' cms?

    Hi Guys,

I'm looking to develop a website that has 'live' and up to the minute instructions on how to build something. I'm looking for opinions on the best CMS that would be suited to the job.

For example, if my site was entitled 'how to build a contemporary beach house', the point of my site would be to teach users how to build a beach house, from the raw material selection to the finishing lick of paint. Originally, I'd have thought that wordpress may be a good cms to use as each raw material could be broken down into categories and would give me a chance to talk about each part respectively.

For example, a category on 'choosing the right wiring system' could include all the relevant information about how to choose the best wires for the job.

Now my problem is this, the nature of the industry changes so frequently, that the 'best wiring' now will not be the 'best' wiring next week... I'd like the site to be a live, up to the minute how to guide, almost in the same vein as a wiki...

Which brings me to my question? What would your opinions be for the best cms to manage a site such as this? Would it indeed be a wiki? Or a wordpress blog? Or some other cms that I (probably) don't even know about yet?

I'd appreciate your viewpoints on the issue if anyone could guide me :)

Who decides if it is the 'best'? If it is you, a blog might be appropriate.

If it is possibly others, wiki might be better

Hey Rushy, is 'how to build a contemporary beach house' your niche site ?

    Don't tell people too much ! ;)

It seems Joomla is the best CMS, Drupal is a good one too, with lot of extensions.

If it's a blog style site, you could use Wordpress. Otherwise Joomla is good for you.

    ive used wordpress and joomla.

wordpress is far easier to setup and maintain, it is also alot better for SEO.

But joomla is nice if your thinking about making a huge website.

    Thanks guys....

No, a beach house site is not my niche ;-) it just seemed to be a good example, might prove quite a fruitful one though for somebody :)

I guess I just need like a live, story-book style thing, where whenever people log on, they can see the best way to build their beach house...

Perhaps I could do it blog-like, in the vein of SEObook or some such, where all the latest tricks of the trade are present and continuously updated?

And no, I'm far too sensible to even try and compete in THAT niche!!

Doing it blog like will allow your visitors to post comments and ask you questions about your "How to step 1". You could easily answer them without rewriting a full article. Plus, this build you more content.

Yeah, I think that a blog style would work the best. Also having a plugin that will show the most read posts in the sidebar would be a great addon.
