I just migrated AD from GoDuddy to host gator today. I thought it may make a good topic and help out other directory owners to share some good or bad hosting experiences we have had. Personally I feel there are some unique issues with hosting for directories and it may help those who are considering making a change or starting up a new directory. The reasons I changed from GoDaddy were - loading seemed sluggish at times, some technical issues that came up from time to time with them, no cPanel, a time I felt they were not exactly honest with me and did I mention Rob really did not like the old host much. On the flip side I have to say that every time I ever called GoDaddy they were extremely friendly which probably kept me there longer than I should have been. Plus I initially paid for two years hosting up front with them. Moving to Host Gator seems to have been a good move so far, because load speeds have improved greatly. The move itself had a couple minor issues which Rob sorted out quickly and kept my stress level low. One thing I have learned is to not pay for a couple years of hosting in advance because sometimes it can be a reason to stay when you really should go. I ended up leaving a lot of hosting time on the table with GoDaddy and some great offers from them to stay. So does anyone else have any good or bad experiences with directory hosting? Can you pass along any tips you have learned from it which may help fellow directory owners?
Hostgator is unbeatable. Another good alternative I use is www.downtownhost.com Never, ever use www.resellerzoom.com or www.asmallorange.com
I rather not recommend hosting for fear of it going bad but im at hostgator, obviously cPanel at any host is easier to work with. Godaddy stats software is not too good, but their dirt cheap, still give good support, i just have a non profit site there, cant see any reason to move it. Keep in mind that the best host out there can and will have probs at some time, id never move because of a few hiccups, but if your site is ever down more than its up then obviously worth moving. Lol, yeah i never pay for more than a couple months.
www.downtownhost.com I have all my blogs and other sites hosted there. I also hosted the zorg directories there and fruity directory too. I've moved Fruity to a UK web host along with my newer niche directory, as I'm a coder I love the lightening fast FTP speeds from being close to home If you're going with hostgator I'd stay away from shared hosting Bruce. You don't want other kids crashing the servers and ruining your websites. They tend to "oversell" their shared plans meaning if you even try use the resources they advertise you'll get the boot - into a dedicated box or out for good.
Godaddy is NOT good for complex hosting. Anything that requires your own software, at least from my experience, never works properly. If you want a simple site, sure godaddy, but any other main host out there will do. I am surprised someone said not to use asmallorange. I heard they were great?
I use Dreamhost and Hostgator. To be honest, Hostgator is the best I have...it is fast & reliable with excellent uptime. HostGator is the only host where I had no problems at all since I use it.
Which UK host Mike, and do they come recommended? I've recently moved to eukhost.com and have had issues although they do respond quickly and helpfully to problems.
http://ukwebsolutionsdirect.co.uk/uk-reseller-hosting.php The first plan So far so good I've been there two months now and it's been great. No downtime, fast loading. Good resources, cpanel etc.
austk - many of the issues I had at GD involved what you mention. The hosting seemed to conflict with some of the functions that I used or wanted. It really just got to the point of way too much stress over hosting and the change was made. It sounds like there are many good experiences from others with different hosts though.
Hi, I have 10 domains on the same hosting (not a very important hosting company), what i want to ask you is: Do i need a diferent Ip for each domain? Is better to use diferent hostings or keep all domains in same place? Thanks
If your sites are interlinked, it is better to have them on different ip's. Even if they are not it is safer to have them hosted on few different hosting accounts as when your single host goes down you loose much more money. Just wanted to share cool website where you can track uptime and get email notifications after 15 minutes of your website downtime. http://basicstate.com/
I use Surpass Hosting, and have been for a few years now. It's pretty good, support is fast also. The pricing is very affordable.
I do hafta say that GoDaddy support has been really great for anything I've called them for, and the wait times have never been long. As mentioned, the stats and lack of cpanel pretty much stinks. I think I'd agree with the poster who said that hosting a 'simple' site with godaddy is a pretty good choice.
Hostagtor is a terrible place to host a web directory except with a dedictaed server. I have had enough with them. I would suggest Bluehost.com as a better alternative.
Im using hostgator also. its really make me flying. I host 60 domain on my account there. can u believe that they r giving unlimited hosting and bandwidth. U can use this free coupon also. Coupon - Green
Thanks roccorolja. As i said , i have 10 webhosting, all of them use the same db, do i need a diferent host for each domain!? This will be really hard for me!
