    For free you can find some great open source software out there. As many people have mentioned Gimp is a great free alternative to Photoshop. Inkscape is a good open source alternative to Illustrator and Blender is a good open source 3D package. These are all powerful tools even though they are free. If you do decide to use them and it works out well for you then you may want to spare a thought for the developers of these projects and donate a little to them for all their hard work!
