Why do people bother writing responses when they haven't read the question properly?

It has been said by a number of people already but I feel it's worth emphasising: Dreamweaver is not free and Wordpress is not web design software. Photoshop, while the industry standard for creating web graphics, is not free software and it's not really for "web design", it's for creating graphics. As mentioned, Gimp is an excellent free alternative to Photoshop.

However, I'm grateful to those who mentioned Notepad++ because I'd never heard of it. I'm probably very slow on the uptake. But I shall be installing that to give it a try. I've been using Textpad for years (not free but very cheap) and it occurred to me I should probably look for something better and more modern, which was what drew me to this post.

The alleycode.com download page says it's only compatible with Windows up to XP and "not recommended on Vista", so I guess it's been a while since it was last updated. The website is basically an advertisement for SEO services, so I don't imagine this software is a big part of their business plan any more.

The latest "news" on the First Page website is dated 2006 and a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then...

Well, you can't go far wrong with Notepad, but even if you don't want to use the more advanced project-management functionality of more sophisticated software, it's useful to have something that highlights pieces of code, especially when you've got hundreds of lines of it. And also when you hit "return" in Notepad the cursor goes to the start of the line and you need to tab across manually, whereas when you press "return" in a code editor, it will place the cursor directly below the start of the line you were just writing, keeping your code in neat, readable blocks. Plus, of course, you need to have an instance of Notepad open for every file you're working on and when I'm developing a website it's not unusual for me to be working on 20 or 30 pages simultaneously, so it's really good to have them all floating or cascading within a single workspace.

For webdesign, just use notepad++. However, Dreamweaver has a lot of benefits.
