I'm using yWriter5 to write my novels and short stories. It's free and really awesome. http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter5.html He also has several other writer's tools. To jumpstart creativity I sometimes use Dreamlines, just type in a few keywords related to the scene you're developing and watch the show. http://solaas.com.ar/dreamlines/ I'm developing an interactive dictionary/thesaurus of nearly 1,400 English verbs at my website. This is for writers in the process of revision, allowing them to easily swap out weak verbs for power verbs and creating attributive verbs. (This feature will be fully operational in one week.) http://writefine.com/verbosaurus.html
Cinnamon Software's Talking Alarm Clock sounds great, unfortunately seems like the downloads arent working presently
I`d recommend Darkroom, a minimalistic full-screen text editor. Writing articles with Darkroom feels like writing with a typewriter, that might be the reason why I like it so much. It`s surprising to see that no one else has mentioned it yet. I`ve become more productive since I use Darkroom, since it`s become more enjoyable to write my articles.

Thanks folks. The main list was already completed a few days ago, so new suggestions aren't being added. Visit the survey I mentioned in my post above if you'd like to have your votes count in the final picks (closes Sunday). If you want to add something, you can use the write-in vote option there.
I have used Open Office and believe me you can not write a single article in it comfortably. So my vote does not go for it, others are OK.
Search for "adwords sandbox" to find the keyword tool - I always search for it b/c I never remember where it is (and it's quicker than digging in my bookmarks!). I use it all the time too - just sorry I didn't think to add it to the list originally.
Just a quick thanks to everyone who made suggestions and voted in the actual survey. You've helped pick the top ten free online tools for writers. Here are the top five to give you an idea of how things ranked: 1. Paypal 2. Wordpress (tied for #2) 3. Gmail (tied for #2) 4. Google Docs 5. OpenOffice There were a few surprises in where things ultimately ranked, but it was interesting to see what tools everyone values the most!
Thanks guys, you people have so much to share. being a new entrant into the freelancing field these things are definitely going to help me for long duration of time.
Wordpress plugins add ease and dimension to blogs. I would consider using WP as a site template too given all the tools and updates provided.
