This is a quite common question, and one you should have run a search on, first.

The answer is simple, of course. Emacs is the best editor, followed by Vi(m). Several lengths back are the rest, many of which are still good enough.

Emacs lets you do everything but view your browsers right from within the browser. Emacs has native support for several concurrent versioning systems, sh (or DOS if you have a legacy os), ssh, ftp and sftp. It runs on more OSes and hardware platforms than you knew existed, so you can use it no matter what machine you have to work from. Emacs supports more languages than I've ever heard of with syntax hi-liting and formatting. If you write server-side scripts such as PHP, PERL, Python or LISP, etc. you can run/test them right in the editor. For compiled languages, you can configure, make and compile without leaving the editor. With Emacs …

Asking for the best editor is easy to answer. The question should have been "what should I try, to see which is the most comfortable for me to use."

    cheers,

    gary

Whats wrong with jedit? That stuff rules. For most minor things I use this http://www.ornj.net/araneae/

    its a very clean app.

    hope that helps,

I love notepad++. it helps in my coding needs.

although only recommended to people who would rather code in tags than to do it in graphics via dreamweaver
