They aren't going to give you a whole lot of benefit plus it isn't time effective as most posts are going to be removed.

Personally, I woulld choose a forum in your industry where you can actually answer questions and participate in discussions. Its on those forums where you will get the most benefit from having a live link.

I thought the posts were kept on database for years. Just that I read somewhere that forums are great for getting additional pagerank.

If the posts in the forums are not pruned like in DP it helps you since all the links are active.
But keeping links in forums where posts are pruned its waste because you links stay for sometime only.

Use forums to generate a little bit of traffic, not for PR purposes.

In the course of designing or programming your own website, you've probably gained a bit of knowledge. So pick a forum in which you can best share that knowledge. As long as you are contributing something positive, I don't think it is too much to ask to get a little traffic in return (say, from a link in your signature). There are newbies joining forums all the time, asking the same questions. The old-timers seem to lose patience pretty quick, either not answering questions, or giving smart-mouth answers. If you become the patient member that constantly answers many newbie questions, you'll get your URL in front of many people. So, join a forum in which you can contribute something positive or one that is related to a hobby of yours (there are forums for just about EVERYTHING) and stay active. Be genuine; don't just join a lot of forums to make pointless posts for the sake of posting your website address.
