I use phpbb. It has a good technical support system but requires quite alot of maintainence in terms of upgrades and backups. phpbb is very popular, so its a target for hackers. That's one reason to keep the board updated.

You can add all types of useful MODs, but they make the upgrades much more time consuming.

I have had my share of problems, but cannot find a better open source product with a good support system.

If you choose phpbb, you might want to restrict your forum to combat spammers. They have been a chronic problem for me lately, and I am going to change policy AGAIN, to only allow members to post, in another attempt to squash the online gambling, pharma, real-estate, porn and other spammer scum.

To make a long story short, a good forum takes alot of work to admin, more than most people realize. Choose your platform wisely.

    I prefer SMF over phpBB

Once upon a time, phpBB was the best open source forum...but that's not the case anymore. It's a lame duck in my opinion...phpBB is hardly being developed anymore, it's always the most vulnerable to hacking, and it doesn't include as many features as SMF.

SMF is being developed extremely rapidly. It hasn't been around nearly as long as phpBB, yet it still comes with more features and security. The only downside to SMF is that it doesnt have as large of a mod/support community, but that will change with time.

SMF or UltimaBB are the best OS options.

When it comes to open source, I have to lean towards SMF with phpbb a close second.
