Best Forum Software for Coop Ads

Discussion in 'Co-op Advertising Network' started by explorer, Mar 9, 2005.

I currently have a phpbb forum. The hack I've seen to allow it to be spidered by G looks complicated and seems to contain unresolved bugs. I'd like to convert to a different board that can be:

    a. Easily spidered by G.
    b. Easily modified to carry Coop ads.

Which board do you think would be best?

    Thanks :)

VB is the best I have found

If your board has enough traffic to justify the lisc.. then I think its tops

Easy hacked , but remember that all hacks have to be re installed every time you update ( which does happen every month or two )

Spiders have no problems with it

This forum is VB as a user do you like it and the features ??

From an admin side is it and good clean

I agree. The best forum for SEO in my opinion is vBulletin.

I own a site dedicated to vBulletin Admins and how to SEO, manage, profit, etc.

Well, first of all, I wouldn't pick forum software based solely on the ad network. That being said, vBulletin is probably the easiest to set it up on simply because the backend is very well written.

vBulletin is my favorite, but it's not because of the ad network.

vBulletin is the best, no doubt. phpbb is good if you like pulling your own hair out ...

Hmm, I disagree, but from a users perspective..

vBulletin usually makes me feel like NOT posting, however, an IPB forum just makes it so comfortable... I don't know why.

I actually feel the opposite and find IPB cumbersome, same with phpbb

we also run a surf forum which is not vBulletin. I have realized that a lot of people don't know how to sign up at forums. We of course are the forum pro's but those guys use the internet to get their free surf reports, email a few people and then turn off the pc.

From all the feedback I get, vBulletin seems to cause less confusion than the others.

Looks like vBulletin is everyone's choice. This was already top of my list but I wanted to see if there were any good alternatives - looks like there are no obvious ones though. Thank you everyone.

Hmmm.. Odd, the mod/hack is SIMPLE. Takes about 5 - 15 minutes depending on comptency level.

Personally, I like phpBB because it is cheap :) vBulletin by far has the best features, but all of the features in vBulletin can be added to phpBB easily. This one in particular does just about everything vBulletin does. And if there is something it does not, I add it when someone requests it: http://forums.mccoypottery.com

So if you are already using phpBB and wanna save some bucks, just use phpbbhacks.com (I think that is it) or the phpbb.com site and wonder through their mods and styles section.

I'm running 3 phpBB forums. The mod to make them spider friendly is bulletproof and only takes a few minutes to install once you know a couple of things. All three of them are running coop ads just fine and were not hard to configure for it at all. The only problem I'm having now is staying validated. I have to log into the coop every day and manually validate them as they always get kicked to 0. When validating they come back with several hunderd weight each. Anyway, if you want more info on getting phpBB configured for spidering and the coop PM me and I'll send you some good stuff.

BTW, what mod are you using?

    2. I have the same validation problem.

I always like to save money where I can and, prompted by you guys, it looks like there are much simpler (and bug free) phpbb hacks available than I had found before.

I'm thinking of using this one which claims to add a SE friendly archive to the forum.

    http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/2841

I'd prefer not to use a hack that requires revalidation for the coop each day though. ;)

There's a mod for phpbb called easymod that saved my butt. It's makes applying the more complex mods a snap. The only thiing you have to watch out for is when your moding phpbb the template is critical. If you try to apply some of the mods with the wrong template you'll end up hosing the thing like fire truck.

There are two mods out there I've looked at for killing off session IDs. One is called seimod and it's a bit much, it just genereates a bunch of html files for the bots to crawl. The other is called botmod, and it does what should have been done in the code to begin with. It just turns the session IDs off for all guests. It works pretty good, my indexed pages have gone up since applying this mod.
