I recently visit a forum that had porn spam all over it. It seemed the moderator had given up on the forum due to overwhelming spam. It there any way of stopping that kind of attack?
My vote goes for MyBB Haven't used vB tbh, it might be better (it should be considering the price) I d/led a SEO mod for it, forum links are forums/Title-Of-Topic-f-2.html, easy to skin (at least for me) You can try http://www.forummatrix.org for a comparison of most software's capabilities, it can't chart ease-of-use though
I used both PP and SMF. I'd have to go with SMF for administrative features. You don't really need FTP to upload themes and other stuff. It's all handled within the admin area. I modded it with a portal (tinyportal). It worked really well. Kenneth
vBulletin would probly be my first choice if I have the money to spend, not just because of the features, but also because of the professional look of the brand on a forum. I would go with SMF if I had a low budget but overall I still find SMF slightly easier to use and moderate even though its a free software.
How would you qualify SMF's search system in terms of reliability of the results. It looks to me like useless on a board with too many posts. You can't actually filter the threads in an effective manner like with vBulletin. As an example, I've always felt like forced to search Mamboserver for issues related to Joomla since Joomla forums are good for browsing but terrible for searching, that's because you have to face SMF against vBulletin.
I like the answers here ... ive just bought a domain and a stack of hosting for it, and wondering which is best ... many have said that vb is the best but costly ... tell me more what kinda costs i can only see the license cost $160 - am i missing something is this daily, monthly?
If you go for the Owned License, it will give you access to 1 year of free download & updates. After that, a $30.00 renewal fee will extend your access to downloads for another year which is quite acceptable.
The $160 is the only cost. Most people would consider that costly when you can get near enough the same thing for free with the alternatives mentioned.
... thanks for the answers ... Yeah i suppose Rodney your right, but the old saying ..."you buy cheap .. you buy twice" always springs to my mind ... anyways, i'm going to purchase this license tomorrow ... now i need someone to install? anyhelpers? - will pay a good rate
My personal favirote at the moment is phpBB, its good, and easy to learn how to manage. However I would say vBulletin would be the best free forum software. I have come to find that you cannot say what the best software is, you can say what the most used, or the most popular is, but not the best. It always comes to opinion when choosing what forum software is the best. Differnt people like certain softwares, and other people like others.
why not check out hotscripts.com.....loads of PHP/ASP forum scripts you can just download and try for free.
It's well worth the price IMO Some vB forums that you'd might be interested to see.. vbulletin.com/forum/ vbulletin.org/forum/ vbulletin-styles.com/ vbulletin-fans.com/ vbenhanced.com/forums/ vbulletin-tutorials.com/
Use PHPBB as its free if you are an experienced webmaster and are sure its going to be a good site with high traffic invest in vbulletin try phpbbhacks.com too for plugins
For Me It Depend On Your Site What It Will Be If Its Like DP then Get vBulletin. But For Me I Am Using Invision Power Board .
