I recently visit a forum that had porn spam all over it. It seemed the moderator had given up on the forum due to overwhelming spam. It there any way of stopping that kind of attack?

My vote goes for MyBB :) Haven't used vB tbh, it might be better (it should be considering the price)

I d/led a SEO mod for it, forum links are forums/Title-Of-Topic-f-2.html, easy to skin (at least for me)

You can try http://www.forummatrix.org for a comparison of most software's capabilities, it can't chart ease-of-use though :p

I used both PP and SMF. I'd have to go with SMF for administrative features. You don't really need FTP to upload themes and other stuff. It's all handled within the admin area. I modded it with a portal (tinyportal). It worked really well.

vBulletin would probly be my first choice if I have the money to spend, not just because of the features, but also because of the professional look of the brand on a forum. I would go with SMF if I had a low budget but overall I still find SMF slightly easier to use and moderate even though its a free software.

How would you qualify SMF's search system in terms of reliability of the results. It looks to me like useless on a board with too many posts. You can't actually filter the threads in an effective manner like with vBulletin.

As an example, I've always felt like forced to search Mamboserver for issues related to Joomla since Joomla forums are good for browsing but terrible for searching, that's because you have to face SMF against vBulletin.

If you go for the Owned License, it will give you access to 1 year of free download & updates. After that, a $30.00 renewal fee will extend your access to downloads for another year which is quite acceptable.

The $160 is the only cost. Most people would consider that costly when you can get near enough the same thing for free with the alternatives mentioned.

My personal favirote at the moment is phpBB, its good, and easy to learn how to manage. However I would say vBulletin would be the best free forum software.

I have come to find that you cannot say what the best software is, you can say what the most used, or the most popular is, but not the best. It always comes to opinion when choosing what forum software is the best.

Differnt people like certain softwares, and other people like others.
