Drupal with Advanced Forum and Pathauto, easily and no question about it. SMF's canonical URL module is fairly easy to code, and MyBB's defaults are not bad. phpBB is a nightmare.

Vbulletin 3.6.X version + vBseo. 3.7 is too bloated.

From what I have seen, vbulletin is the most search engine friendly. And you do not have to have the seo plugin for VB.

Go to google and do a search for a topic and a forum. For this example lets use the search term of "news forum" - but without the quotes. The first result looks like a blog, the second result is a vbulletin forum, the third result is a website, the 4th result is a vbulletin forum, the 5th result is a yabb forum.

You will see vbulletin rank well, and on a more consistent level then just about any other forum software. Just go to google, do your searches and see what forum software almost always ranks at the top. And most of the time that is going to be VB.

I think that has more to do with it's widespread use for large forums with large amounts of content than actual forum software. I don't see how Mybb is any less in terms of how it deals with search engines.

My Mybb forum ranks #1 for a whole pile of keywords just fine.

Although vBulletin is very capable of being highly optimized and you can easily obtain pleasing SERPs with vBulletin out-of-the-box, I think if you're really keen on high optimization you should go for vBulletin + vBSEO. It's a wonderful combination and vBSEO is a great product.

I agree with Rusty, Vanilla is tits! its unfortunate the peanut gallery can't seem to get their head around it because its layed out a bit different. It is also painfully easy to make it look like the other forums but that is not really the point of vanilla.

Now a day, most of the forums are SEO friendly but you can make it more SEO friendly using plugins.

    vBulletin with vbSEO
    SMF with Pretty URL
    Phpbb with phpbb-seo
