    The "best" is always relative...

I would definitely say vBulletin, but I've managed amazing forums with phpBB and MyBB so it all depends...

vBulletin was the best, have been a customer for 3,5 years, when i bought my first license it was the best piece of script you could find, with potential features from developers, nearly bug free, great support etc.

Now these days are over, so give IPB a try, its the one coming up to be no1 in professional installations in my opinion! Great piece of software, great support, complete suite with a proper CMS and more than anything else, GOOD strategy on their product, confidence that the money your are investing on the product dont get wasted!

For vB4 it seems that there is no plan, no strategy, nothing is organized, they just take money and they fool around! Bugs were all over the product and a year after the team is feeling ok because they got them down to a normal number, a year after the gold release! Every month they are changing their minds on how to manage the product, the new releases testing etc. etc. and every time they are failing! Buy Buy VBulletin!
A great piece of software, that they have succeeded to f@(# upside down!

You should also consider Xenforo, if you are not in a hurry, take a look on what the former developing team of vb has done!

I like Vbulletin a lot , but i also like that MyBB is free and it seems good. I haven't played around with MyBB enough to know if i like it better than Vbulletin.

I have experience with SMF and some phpbb , i liked SMF over phpbb and like vbulletin over both

vBulletin for me; some of the free ones are not too bad but if you're serious about building a long term forum then you should consider Vbulletin sooner rather than later.

Paid: Vbulletin (The IPB is bad, support is bad, the guys form the IPB is....)
Free: MyBB. I think is the best free forum script, seo friendly, user friendly, and easy to use admin cp and mod cp.

best is vBulletin, but if you need a good free forum software, go for phpBB. Big forums like warez-bb use phpBB

MyBB is the best free forum software.
vBulletin the best paid forum software.

I personally like MyBB better considering the Admin Control Panel is not full of options.
