"Best" is an opinion, so you'll have to try a few, but Notepad++ is free and pretty good.

Since when is sublime free? I know that the "evaluation time" has no limit, but that doesn't make it free...

That's total bull***t. Also, you forgot to mention that this "best" costs around 400$.

There are other and better tools than DW. But, like Rukbat said, just try a few.

My pick would be Netbeans. It's mainly a Java IDE, but it has a PHP package, which is pretty nice (also free)

Try PSPad - a free editor with plentiful features. I'm using it for php, html and css editing.
Notepad++ is also good, it's a matter of personal preference

    I really like Notepad++.

It's extremely simple. Supports all the basic stuff that one would need. And colouring the text of course. I use it for everything not just php!

If you are managing very large PHP projects (for example this site), Zend Studio is the way to go.

The solution looks interesting. How much memory footprint does it make/eat/create? (I have no idea what the verb should be, so please bear with me)

Dreamweaver can be an option because it has the user friendly code editor but not the best one. So I would suggest PHPEd. It provides fast and flexible publishing of your php scripts.

Dreamweaver is the best PHP editor for beginner web designer and web developer along it I also like to choose Notepad++ and ConTEXT ( It's a freeware editor with syntax highlighting).

    Oh boy, here we go..

Now, tell me: Why is Dreamweaver the "best" PHP editor? What does it do better than, let's say, Netbeans?

Disregard the fact that DW costs about 400$

What makes DW better than Netbeans?

Mostly, Dreamweaver is used by web designers as it provides WYSIWYG features, on the other hand Netbeans is generally used by web developers but it doesn't have WYSIWYG features. Dreamweaver also provides other design features like Flash Animation, Graphics/Imaging Tools, Site Backup, Video and Audio Multimedia with Help & Support but Netbeans not provide all of these features.

I know Dreamweaver cost $399 as Netbeans is free to use. I didn't say Netbeans is not the Best. I like Dreamweaver to use but Netbeans also the best one PHP editors as it is free to use - Generally it's more useful to web developers than web designers.

And that is a good thing? Why?

You simply DO NOT get what you see. You know why? Because every browser renders differently. Also the code that these editors produce is a horrible mess. Our local hero, Deathshadow, can tell you more on this matter.

What exactly has this to do with PHP? And why would one need this?

When you insert an image / audio / video you put them into their proper tags. Seems like all these fancy things do this -> "click me to open a file browser and then you can choose the thing you want in your file and I'll auto generate the code for you, you lazy bum".

Easy there with the superlatives. 2 things cannot be "best".

I prefer EditPad Pro. It's not free but I have a cracked version I use and like it. Other than that I just use Notepad sometimes. Don't need anything fancy to get it done.
