I have been asked to help a friend starting a T-Shirt business who needs a good website done.

What is the best eCommerce software for selling tangible products?

I am totally new to this so any tips would be huge. What do I do and what do I avoid?

Hey there. If you don't have a big budget you can try OsCommerce, ZentCart or ZeusCart as refered above, but there is a solution (which I considere the best) called cs-cart. You can try them without hesitation. Please, check them out, seek at google for: cs-cart and you'll find them. They have a community version if you have not much money. But, if you have a considerable budget, I recommend you to buy their license.

There are many templates available for magneto which is specially designed to sell t-shirts like tangible products. i reckon you can set up an online store in 300-500 USD.

 

Thanks . Got hosting myself already so I need a standalone. It seems the paid solutions are asking you to pay only for hosting so I probably need free. Are there any benefits to getting a paid solution?
Interesting, perfect, I needed to know about this add-ons thing.
With what little I know, I am thinking about Magneto (just because I know quite a few good stores that use it). Is that a good idea?

If you're familiar with WordPress, you can use the WooCommerce plugin to turn WordPress into an online shop. There's also the standalone PrestaShop - I've worked it before and it seems to be a decent solution.

 

There are a lot of good free Open Source systems. I can suggest you Virtuemart, Prestashop, osCommerce, Zen Cart, Magento etc.
Magento is good if you have very big shop with great number of products. But if you have small or medium business you don't need Magento. It's quite complicated. Prestashop is good alternative to Magento. It has a lot of modules and addons.
I think, I'd rather go with Virtuemart, because it is Joomla extension. It is functional und will help you to create powerful medium online shop.
I suggest you to visit official websites of these systems and choose what you like and need.
