Yes copyscape is a good option but to be 100% sure take few random sentences of the content and search for it between " " in google, yahoo and Bing that will show you if the content was previously indexed in another site or not.

Copyscape can only check 5 pages of a domain, and after that you have to pay.
    Dupecop.com is great too.

it depends what you want to do. As the other posters say, copyscape is great for detecting plagiarism of your work. It's not quite so useful though, if you need to figure out how 'unique' a search engine will think your page is.

Copyscape is good enough for me. Personally I'm not obsessed with these duplicate content services.
I know I always publish unique content on authority domains and even if it gets stolen by someone I don't care.

thats is true and just fine. but what if you buy articles from a ghost writer and the writer passes on some copied or PLR article to you? happens all the time

    Another Copyscape here.
That's the only trusted tool we're using nowadays.
    Nothing else..

well copyscape is a good tool but the easiest way is to copy the content and paste it in the query box of search engine within the double quotes
