Best Directories to buy links from?

when I've opened up a new site before, I went to directory critic and submitted to all the niche directories that fit the site I opened

True, but it costs a lot of money to maintain every year. The amount of money spent there can be split up and get linked from many lesser-known but high quality directories that have good PR.
