I am thinking either Monday or Tuesday. What are your thoughts?

Tuesday. There's a reason why most DVDs and games release on that specific day. Experience shows WoM (Word of Mouth) peaks on Tuesdays for myself as well. I'm sure it would work the same for a press release.

Tuesday or Thursday from our experience, with usually Tuesday giving a slightly better return than Thursday

But both have been good days for us :)

Monday morning if your website is not wellknown because journalists have generally an empty agenda....
Or : Friday morning : your articles will stay on top during the Week End and the next monday Morning.

For us, both have been good days.

Actually, Mondays are often loaded with more competition, and releasing on a Friday or the weekend aren't a good idea. You'll be buried by Monday; not still "on top". In general, most here are right... shoot for Tuesdays when you can. I've found Tuesdays and Wednesdays are both decent if you're targeting predominantly online media, but Tuesdays are better if you can get it out in time.

Actually, most are busy on a Monday morning picking up the pieces from the weekend. Bad, bad idea.

Great info thanks. For me weekends could be either good or bad. RE: selling not PR, The weekend could be when people take it easy and go shopping online. Or it could be the time when they want to get out of the house and do their own thing offline.

presumably it would the same for PR wouldnt it? re: fridays, saturdays and sundays.

Also, depending on what the news is, and type of company (public or private) you want to keep in mind the openings and closing of markets the news could have an impact on. If you are going to release great news....market open....bad news...after the markets have closed.

None of the replies are correct so far.

The correct answer is to contact the journalist you are submiting it to and ask them. That way you can dial backwards from their submission deadline, when do they need it by... so it can be published on 'x' day?

Journalists will tell you, just ask. They will even tell you how to dial back so it arrives at the right time when they are most keen on hearing from you and ends up being an article on the day they tell you that you should shoot for.

    Yikes!

That means I would recieve about 30 phone calls a day :(

There is nothing worse than being harrased by a PR rep who is desperate to get their release written up.

call a journalist and try to pursuave him/her that you idea is really worthy of his time and my good news.. if it something really unique that can catch peoples eyes they would publish it for free otherwise you will have to pay..

I think Tuesday is the best day for release

Anyone who calls desperate to get their release written up is revealing the lack of real newsworthiness by begging or harrasing.

I'm talking about one phone call. Journalists will tell you circulation numbers on different days, the number of days to dial back if you are targeting a day, which days are usually slow news days... one phone call and you know how that publication tends in terms of supply and demand for news. There isn't any need to call regarding every story.

I prefer to have bigger stories printed before friday, otherwise, you miss the kick-on with morning radio and tv news discussion that isn't anywhere near as good on the weekend. e.g. in print thursday, discussed on radio and or tv friday morning. verses in print friday, and nothing much on saturday. Weekend papers are ok as they have wider circulation and you can get covered in the morning discussion on monday.

If the story isn't that strong and the journo says fridays are usually slow... then your not so crash hot stories should be dialed back for publication on fridays because it probably won't rate a mention on the radio or tv anyway.

Dominic, while you're right in the sense of those willing to put a focus on print publications and willing to do the legwork of manual distribution, you need to keep in mind that the vast majority of people on DP simply don't / won't do that (even if it can be more effective).

The fact of the matter is that most don't even have a single media target in mind before they jump in... they just plan to use an online service in the hopes of being picked up by blogs and online outlets, b/c they want coverage where they'll also get backlinks.

So while I don't really disagree at all with your points, as far as the market hanging around DP is concerned, a Tuesday release date is the right answer. If they're willing and able to take care of manual distribution to journalists, then they absolutely should do things the way you detailed. :)
