Best CMS - Community website

I am starting a new site which will mainly start off as an information website and will turn into a community.

I originally planned on just making it all from scratch, but I think that could waste a lot of time in the beginning, even though it really would offer the greatest flexibility/ease to scale.

I am now considering just using a CMS and using that to run the site. I only really know of Joomla! and am currently reading more about it. Are there any other options that offer a lot of functionality and can be easily customized? A paid option is possible but it would need to be "worth" it in comparison to something such as Joomla!

    Thanks for all suggestions!

Joomla is a good option and easy to extend. The Community Builder module can be added to take care of the community side of things.

    Highly recommended.

yes.. if you want a information/content based website that should turn into a community one of the easiest option would be to go for Joomla + community builder...

i've got 2 sites that started the same exact way and now are full blown communities.. one of them are in my signature and they work very well...

with community builder you can progresively add features as your community grows and keep them coming back...

i'm sure there are many more CMS that can do similar stuff but Joomla + Community builder is almost an out of the box solution for what you want...

and if you ever want a sole community site u should try: http://www.phpizabi.net/

sorry.. maybe i didn't use the proper term... ingles no es mi idioma nativo...

phpizabi is not CMS so you can't change content on the site. it's a social network system... and a really good one at that.

I installed Joomla and am going through it now... but it seems so bloated?

I mean, I guess it is very versatile, and I am definitely not yet familiar with it... but it seems to be "too much"...?

I've also heard very good things about Joomla. Of course, WP is my favorite, but I'm biased.
