The city in UK for lover of party and night-life is city of London, but if you want to have a cool, Hereford is one of the best place to leave.
Can't believe some of these answers.... "London - I've never been there (so why comment)". London is one of the most depressing cities on the planet, I hate it. I've worked there, I've been many times and each time I see it I hate it more... "missigun"--- WTF! I think perhaps that was meant to say Michigan. Which, if you pick up an atlas is on the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean... Brighton was a good suggestion, as were Manchester and Bristol - and definitely take a look at Liverpool. But if you really want the coolest cities have a look at Basingstoke, Hull and Swindon
If I had my time again in England I would seriously consider somewhere in Yorkshire. York itself is very nice.
what happend to Scotland and Northern Ireland how comes its all london? I mean londons a nice place for a brake but i would never want to live in the place. Durham - Newcastle - Galway - Dublin - Edinburgh The funny thing is i would say Edinburgh and dublin are alot nicer places to live then london.

Manchester is good, has a good music scene up there too. Obviously London is a good place to be though it is expensive. Leeds is good, a very student based city.
