Also, joining and participating in forum discussion is a great way to learn and contribute. If you are going to learn PHP, you should have a little more than a basic understanding of HTML and CSS too, so you can actually put the PHP to some use on the web. You will also need to learn how to talk to and use some sort of database - the most common being MySQL.
