I use Wordpress and really do like it alot. Some of other free blogging platforms that you can try Nucleus, Blogger, Live Journal, Weebly, and Xanga. These are all free web 2.0 Blog platforms.

What are you trying to do - build a blog to make money with or build content on Web 2.0 properties to build backlinks? If you are doing the first you can't use Wordpress.com (free version) for selling anything. Fabulous for backlinks though. the other services mentioned by Carla (who I think I know from somewhere but not sure where - WAHM?) are all great for building backlinks as well.

Wordpress -- but go SELF-HOSTED. No other way to go. Yeah, it costs you $60 or so per year -- WELL worth it.

Wordpress, on your own domain, under your control, unable to be deleted and destroyed by a corporation which decides one day that your content is not worthy of their hosting.
Seriously, why do people put so much at risk?
A blog is like a novel. Would you spend years writing a bock and then give it to someone else to burn? No!
Pay the pennies every month and control it all yourself. You'll benefit in the long term.

It really depends on your level of tech proficiency. If you don't know HTML, www.blogger.com is really simple to use. If you want to do a lot of customization, www.typepad.com is probably better.
