I try to vary my anchor text a lot, but I don't stick to any kind of percentages. I use my targeted keyword for links from high quality sites. For all other links I use 20 - 30 variations. Part of it depends on how many keywords you want to target with your homepage.

I've had good success using a variation of the keywords. For example, if my site were about cars:

    Cars
    Blue Cars
    Big Cars
    Best Big Cars
    etc.

By doing this one of my sites had the number 1 term (cars in this example) in it's niche and also owns most of the other terms I've targeted. I mix it up a lot without worrying about what the extra words are or what percentage I'm using.

Nobody can actually tell you the best percentage. There are a lot of factors which you have to take into consideration and whatever figure you think is correct, definitely a study needs to be done to confirm on that. Without data, it's very hard to come to conclusion.

For the anchor texts that you guys use, do you guys check if that exact combination has any search volume and ad value with Google Adwords Tool? For example if the anchor text is "best cheap blue new widgets" and that exact combo does not have any search volume or value, but there are 3 word keyword combinations within that anchor that do have search volume do you still use it?. Let's say, I see that ppl are actually searching for "blue new widgets, cheap new widgets, best new widgets, etc." and my site has articles on those keyword combos. I build 60% of my links with that anchor text term and the rest with a variation. So the question is will that particular anchor text help me move up the SERPs for any of those combo or just if that exact keyword is searched for? So if ppl are searching for "best new widgets" and I have enough links built, then my site will be able to show high in the SERPS (assuming I've done other SEO as well)? Is it good idea to combine several keywords that have search volume and you are targeting into a few anchor texts to rank for all the different combo of keywords? What do you guys think?

What your orginal question describes is a myth or not true.

The anchor text (link's visible text) can be 100% and acceptable to Google.

    Note my Sigs below.

    < a href="http://www.catanich.com/">Internet Marketing Services</a>

    This is 100% and ok.

What you do not do is

    < a href="http://www.catanich.com/">Internet Marketing Services Dallas - Internet Marketing Services Texas - Internet Marketing Services - USA</a>

    G will consider this spam.

    You need to vary.

I read a long while back (cannot find the source now) that on the average mom and pop site, the anchor text will be 60% http:// 20% anchor text and 20% 'other'.
