benefits of registering with search engines

I am getting two strands of advice. firstly that there is no need to register formally with all the search engines other than google.

The second advice is if I register my site or submit my site ( whichever is right) formally with other search engines this ensure my site is on the lesser engines.

So do all the various search engines, other than google, automatically find my site or should I go to each one and submit my site formally

Its is a mystery to me how to get on all the lesser search engines and if I need to actually do anything.

There is little benefit to registering with any search engine. Yes, you should use Google's Webmaster Tools, etc but "search engine submission" as a general rule is unnecessary and often damaging. Search engines will find your website, and they will index it. Put your time and effort into developing relevant content and optimizing the website itself.. and in getting quality inbound links to your website.

No need to submit your site to all those search engines. The top five or ten search engines will find your site anyway, if the site is regularly updated and content is good. At least the top three search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) will find your site anyway and will index it. Submitting to the rest of the (little) search engines is not worth the time.

No, one need never submit. In fact, it has been reported that if you do submit to some of the bigger engines that allow it, that you may end up with a few points against you from the start. You are better off letting the engines do what they exist to do. Search engine submission is in most cases a truly stupid idea.

Of course, submitting to small directory sites, etc is a different story. But any search engine that actually has real human users? Don't bother.

You don't really have to submit your to other search engines. You need to focus on getting links from strong sites and eventually search engines will find your site.

I am not really sure if website owners still need to submit their websites to search engines. As far as I know, search engines will automatically list website which their bots come across with :)
