    hi,

Why in your opinion is DMOZ so effective and necessary for the ranking of Google and other places. I have a hard time understanding how this one directory can top all other places.

You are not alone, most people feel that way... it's just because it is an old and established site but there is no way it should be weighed so heavily. It's corrupt, inefficient and arcane.

It's also free (for everyone), with volunteers building it for a hobby, and it's still the biggest directory on the internet.
It has problems, to be sure, and nobody knows that more than the editors, but it's still useful, unique, and demonstrably of enormous interest, to judge from this forum alone. ;)

This has already been discussed in several threads...

The most recent being: Whats the big deal about DMOZ??

Yes, but notice that AltaVista - A9 - AOL - Ask - Clusty - Gigablast - Lycos - MSN - Yahoo are all now missing from that list ;)

And the fact that each site on that list is a clone, it's ALL duplicate content, so is not really all that much help.

Yes and they get listed too!

zerodirectory.com is ODP with Adsense ads. Very worthy of a listing in ODP,
it just gets funnier and funnier!

Why its funny: See an editor of ODP said "Look a website that uses ODP data and puts adsense ads around it" then they said "yep thats a good one let me list that on ODP for everyone to see"

See it's an irony thing! You can't get your site listed because they won't read your submission or they think your site is too commericial but someone copies their directory and wraps it with adsense ads and that warrants a listing!

Yes I did, so now you are saying that if a site uses ODP data then no matter what they will get a listing in that category?

They should be in a category called "sites that have no business being listed anywhere"

According to the ODP guidelines that stress UNIQUE content, that category should not even exist...

Not 'no matter what'; only if they meet the terms of our licence :).

I see. So if I create a site tomorrow that meets the terms of the license I can expect to be listed on ODP, how long will that take?
