Just think about it. Your main site is selling product/service X on yourmainsite.com if you put up a blog on yourmainsite.com/blog or even better on a new domain lets say, yourmainsite.NET/ etc........ everytime you write a blog post, you will link back to your main site, even better, now you have the option of deep linking.

If your site is new, you put up a blog, put up some *ping* sites and your blog will we crawled faster, and this might help you index your main site faster.

Remember, there are no such thing as free lunch, if you put up a site, and expect it to grow by it self, forget it, 99,99% chances for that never happening.
