How can I benchmark the websites and portals. especially banking portals. Please help me out with whatever tools there are, both free and paid. Preferably free ;)

Which websites and banks did you have in mind?

And what statistics are you hoping to gather?

well thats the problem. I dont have any stats in mind otherwise I would have googled for it. I need any stats that would help me gauge the various aspects of performance of the website. Like in your sig uptime monitoring is just a small indicator which I intend to use.
I will be analyzing some Indian banking websites and compare them.

Ok, let me ask the question another way :)

what "various aspects of performance" are you hoping to examine?

Well I took a look at the page you pointed me to on the gomez site.

What they are really doing is massaging the collected data that any serious uptime monitoring application already has available and formating it for presentation in a manner targetted to the audience. Nothing really new. Keynote for example also does the same thing.

The trick in doing this is gathering the data consistently and accurately. Meaning that your own servers, network and software have to be up to the task. Then you have to review all of your available options with these needs in mind. The presentation is usually not a problem, it is a case of slicing and dicing the data properly.

Final question. Why do you want to do this? There are already a number of significant players in this space. So you need a compelling business case to embark on the journey.

My objective is a project report to a particular company regarding their portal.

In that case just get the windows app from paessler.

You will have to leave it running 24x7 with good connectivity for the duration of your review.

Or, sign up with keynote for the duration, grab the reports and reformat them.
