What would be a good price to put on keywords if you are new to adwords? Lets say you have just a $100 budget and you want your results to show in top 10 for searched keyword "game" -- I was thinking of advertising with this.

There's definitely a lot that comes into play here. First off, I'm guessing you're using the keyword "game" for an example, as you'd never want to bid on that keyword alone.

The price you pay for keywords will really depend on your Quality Score. Better quality score (more relevant landing page, ad text, keywords, ad copy, CTR) means lower prices and better ad position.

How much you will pay also depends on the competition. If you're really in an underground niche, you might not have to pay more than 5-10 cents, but in a more competitive market, it might range from 20 cents to 1$. Personally, I average around 28 cents per click for my semi-competitive markets.

There's a lot of factors that go into all of this though. Be sure to take your time, research your keywords & market, and also how Adsense and the QS works in determining your ad cost & position.

Its easy to test. Start off by bidding the lowest amount, and see where you place. It shouldn't take longer than five minutes or so for it to appear.

If I am testing a new keyword I can usually find out wat i'd have to pay for each of the important positions within half an hour or so, which shouldn't doesn't raid the budget too much

I use adwords for advertising my sites and don't ever increase the bid above 3p. I always start with the default at 1p and see what the minimum requirement is to make the keyword active. If it is above 3p I don't remove the keyword but rather review it at another time. The bid cost varies depending on the time, day and country so if its a high bid required to make the keywrod active don't automatically go for the recommended amount consider other words and find some that are lower bids a phrase is more likely to attract a lower bid than a single word for example.

Hope this helps if not I could give you some examples

How do you know where you place?

Also will your own ads show up on your own sites?

When you set up your add and it starts running the report function on adwords tells you where you place.
Yes your ads could show up on your sites, but there is an option to set so that they can't, not that I've used it, but I have seen it listed to exclude sites

How come Google indicates that I've bid too low for some of my adwords,
but on the same report there are still clicks on impressions
for those adwords, and I'm charged for those clicks at my bid price?

The way google works it will activate your add when it is relevant and at the right price. The price changes by market and by tiime as well as content. An add which is active at 2am may not be active by 9 am as more users are there at 9 am the add becomes more expensive.

You are in a bid auction, your competitors in the auction are bidding higher than you are.

Have you tried go click? they have an unbid option.

They are a bit more focussed on anti fraud and not as easy to managed as google but if you are in the UK the cost is much lower. :)

Depending on what I'm advertising I often start bidding quite high and once I get a good position drop my bid to see how low I can go and still keep a relatively good position.

That's fine in some businesses, but you won't get far in the mortgage/loans markets, or legal advice!

The price that you have to pay varies according to the area that you're bidding on - on one of my campaigns, I've got clicks that cost £8 each ($15), just to appear on page 1 (and even then I've got keywords that don't appear in the top ten).

It's all down to the value of a conversion, the amount of competition etc...
